Shiroabhyanga: Ayurvedic head, neck and shoulder massage

Shiroabhyanga is the traditional Ayurvedic head massage: warm herbal oil is massaged into the scalp, head, neck and shoulders, with attention to marma (pressure) points. At Arogya Studio in Colindale it takes 45 minutes and costs £55.

It is the simplest way to try Ayurvedic bodywork, and the treatment the rest of the head and scalp menu is built on. The oil is warmed before it is applied.

Questions

Shiroabhyanga head massage: common questions.

How much is Shiroabhyanga at Arogya Studio?

£55 for 45 minutes.

Is oil used, and will it be in my hair afterwards?

Yes. Warm herbal oil is part of the treatment, so expect oil in your hair when you leave. If you would rather have it washed out, add the 30-minute Hair Wash (shampoo, conditioner and towel dry) for £40.

What is the difference between Shiroabhyanga and a head spa?

Shiroabhyanga is a warm-oil massage of the scalp, neck and shoulders, 45 minutes for £55. A head spa adds scalp exfoliation and cleansing, steam, a hair mask and a rinse, and runs from 45 minutes to 2 hours (£85 to £155).

Is this treatment for women only?

Yes. All hands-on treatments at Arogya Studio are for women only, in a private room with Dr Priyanka. Consultations are open to everyone.
